After winning three straight golds in Skateboarding Big Air, Danny Way sat out of last year’s X Games with a recovering knee. Tomorrow night he's back, ready to regain his throne on the top on the MegaRamp podium, the event he invented!
If you know your Danny Way history, you know that he invented the MegaRamp concept around the turn of the millennium. After taking vert to the next level with the creation of the SuperRamp, he pushed for something even bigger to give him more room and airtime to progress his tricks and skateboarding. The MegaRamp was the result, and the footage gathered for—then released in—The DC Video and later The DC Video Deluxe Edition basically changed everyone’s idea of what’s possible on a skateboard.
When X Games asked Danny to return for X10 in Los Angeles, he agreed to compete with a couple simple requests: it would be on his terms, and on his ramp. X created the ramp, Danny attended X, and simply dominated the event and took the gold… at that point Danny was the only skateboarder out there with the skills to handle the massive gap and 20-foot plus quarterpipe.
From there, despite other competitors gaining experience and progressing things on the MegaRamp, Danny went on take gold for the next two years straight. Between those successes, he used the MegaRamp to jump over the Great Wall of China and a portion of it to jump off the 82’ guitar on front of the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas.
So with so many accomplishments on the MegaRamp so far, it’s hard to think of Danny as anything but the favorite to win the event this year. But, there are a slew of other guys logging time on the ramp, looking to take down Danny’s undefeated MegaRamp legacy. Jake Brown, Bob Burnquist, and the rest of the guys are pushing each other to do some amazing things over the gap and out of the QP, so it’ll be an amazing contest no matter what.
